Basic Rug Care
Rugs deserve regular care and, in some cases, specialized cleaning attention.
- Washing rugs: If you have a smaller rug that needs cleaning, first check the manufacturer’s label to confirm whether it can be safely machine washed. Before washing, shake the rug outside to remove loose dirt and debris. Use a mild detergent and follow the recommended water temperature and care instructions provided by the manufacturer. Tumble dry using the lowest heat setting recommended for the rug material.
- Cleaning larger rugs: If your larger rug can be safely moved, shake it outside first to help remove loose debris. You can then place it over a sturdy clothesline or railing and gently beat or brush it before vacuuming thoroughly. If the rug label recommends dry cleaning or specialty care only, consider contacting the cleaning professionals at Chem-Dry of Boerne. Our team provides professional area rug cleaning services for a variety of rug styles and materials.
- Vacuuming area rugs: Area rugs with fringe may require extra care while vacuuming. Use gentle suction and vacuum from the center of the rug outward toward the fringe, taking care to avoid catching fringe fibers in the vacuum beater bar. You may also lift the edge of the rug carefully to vacuum underneath the fringe area.
- Caring for Oriental, Turkish, or Persian rugs: Follow the rug manufacturer’s cleaning and care recommendations whenever available. Delicate or heirloom-style rugs may benefit from professional cleaning services designed for specialty rug materials and construction.
