Spot Removal Steps

1. Act Quickly! Many spills and spots are easier to address when cleaned promptly. The longer a spill remains on carpet fibers, the more difficult it may become to remove completely. Carpet materials and stain resistance can vary depending on the type and age of the carpet.

2. Blot liquids with an absorbent, white, dry cloth or white paper towels without printing.

3. Do not scrub the area! Scrubbing may damage or distort carpet fibers. Continue blotting with paper towels or a dry cloth until the area is as dry as possible. For semi-solid spills, gently lift debris with a rounded spoon. Solid spills should be broken apart carefully and vacuumed thoroughly. If the spill can be identified, follow the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning instructions when available.

4. Pretest any spot removal agent in an inconspicuous area to help ensure the solution does not affect carpet fibers or dyes. Apply a few drops to the test area and blot with a dry, white cloth. If color transfer, fading, or damage occurs, discontinue use and select a different cleaning solution.

5. Apply a small amount of the selected cleaning solution to a dry, white cloth and gently work it into the affected area.

6. Work from the edges of the spill toward the center to help prevent spreading. Avoid scrubbing. Blot gently to absorb as much of the spill as possible, repeating as needed.

7. Continue using the first cleaning solution while progress is being made. Additional cleaning products may not be necessary if the original solution is effective.

8. Be patient! Some spots may require repeating the same step multiple times before improvement is visible.

9. Rinse the affected area thoroughly with cold water, then blot dry with a clean cloth until excess moisture and cleaning solution have been removed.

10. Apply a one-half inch layer of white paper towels to the affected area and place a flat, heavy object on top to absorb remaining moisture. Replace paper towels as needed. A dry absorbent compound may also help speed drying.
